Cayucos, Cherokee for "kayak", was originally named by a Cherokee Indian tribe over 500 years ago.  In 1867, Captain James Cass recognized it's location as an excellent port for shipping.  Along with his partner, Captain Ingals, he built the pier, a store and a warehouse.  Soon after, the town of Cayucos was developed.  Today, it's one of the last old fashioned beach towns left in California with some of the orignial buildings and the saloon still standing.  Cayucos invites people to slow down, experience, and take-in its stunning beaches; a retreat from fast-paced city life.  Enjoy kayaking, surfing, sunning, biking, hiking, award winning restaurants, gift shops, wine tasting, local events, and the best old fashioned 4th of July celebration you've ever seen!  With a population of around 3,000, only about 1,000 people are full-time residents.  From classic beach cottages to oceanfront homes with steps down to the sand, or panoramic view homes up on the hill, there's something for everyone in several price ranges.  The town is surrounded by ranch property with green rolling hills dotted with majestic oaks.  It's just a 15-20 minute drive to San Luis Obispo, 20 minutes to the Cambria / San Simeon area and 25-30 minutes to Paso Robles.  With its miles of sandy beaches, scenic views, and charming downtown atmosphere, Cayucos is the perfect destination for enjoying the California Central Coast Lifestyle.
